Now Page 2025-10-29
What's going on with me right now.
I learned about the "now page" from Derek Sivers. I liked the idea, so I'm trying it out for myself. My intent is to share what's happening in my life right now, then update as needed in the future to reflect my current situation.

Husband
My wife and I celebrated our 6th anniversary this month. As in other areas of life, sometimes it's hard to believe it has been that long because it just feels like yesterday, but other times it's hard to remember what life was like before we got married.
I started writing a whole lot here, and I think it's better that I reserve that writing for its own dedicated article. The ideas are bigger than the small amount of space I could reasonably devote to them here.
I am excited to see where our relationship takes us next.
Father
I'm the dad of a toddler.
Sometimes we go to the park or on a hike. Those are usually the good days.
Other times I have to crocodile wrestle my surprisingly strong and flailing toddler when trying to take off a wet diaper.
Screaming and screeching commence.
We learn together. We explore. She has helped me cook eggs and fix a vacuum cleaner.
In one of my prouder achievements as a dad, I have successfully introduced the Beatles to my daughter. She loves Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Strawberry Fields Forever. It is magical to see my daughter's face light up when she hears the Beatles.
Home renovations
After living in our home for about four years, my wife and I decided to move forward with a couple of projects we've been wanting to do: updating our kitchen and building out some dedicated music studio space.
The studio is pretty much done, and we are a couple weeks away from finishing up in the kitchen. I'm really excited to be able to bring my students (back?) into the new space.
Music
Music is such a big component in my life, and it's hard to shove everything into one bucket.
Songwriting & Arranging
I'm putting the finishing touches on a few songs I've been working on. I've played all of them for a handful of people at this point, and I would like to share them more broadly soon.
Here are a few songs I have finished writing:
- One Last Dance
- Tiny Fingers
- Socks (This Is My Paradise)
For the first time (probably ever), I am spending time every day with the intention of writing music. Not necessarily with the goal of writing a song all the time.
Sometimes it's just playing around with chords and finding interesting chord progressions and strumming patterns.
Other times I go spelunking for lyrics by reading through some of my favorite books and finding individual words that have an interesting rhythm, sound, or flavor that I would like to use in my songwriting.
I don't know where all of this is heading just yet, but I like the direction so far.
Recording & Sharing
I have never really given my music the time and attention needed to record the songs in some permanent way. Or at least not in a way that I am happy with.
I'm changing that, which means I am discovering just how much I don't know about recording and producing music. I'm also making some music along the way and learning a ton in the process.
I'm putting this here to make it a bit more real: I want to fully record, produce, and release a song by the end of 2025.
Performance
Other than a church music gig, I haven't really spent much time performing music since I was in college.
I graduated college 16 years ago.
I decided that 16 years was long enough, so I am seeking out opportunities to perform live music once again.
I recently met up with a trumpet player and bass player, and I'm looking forward to playing some live jazz again very soon.
I'm also exploring other ways to get back into the live music scene (open mic, cover band, originals, instrumental, Christmas, you get the idea).
Teaching
This one is so far down the music list right now simply because I paused lessons for the duration of our home renovations. I figured I would miss my time with my students, but I didn't anticipate just how weird my days feel without my normal teaching schedule.
On the bright side, I have freed up some of my limited mental capacity to think less day-to-day and more big picture.
I have a number of ideas I want to share and try out with my current and future students.
The down time has also given me a chance to tinker with my studio's layout to find the environment that is most conducive to growth, fun, and just making music. I'm not all the way there yet, but I'm getting closer.
Writing
I'm writing more these days. I'm planning to share at least some of it. More to come.
